My Writing Process

The one thing that always fascinates me are other poets or writers writing process. This is the thing I will buy books on, watch YouTube videos and read blog posts about. I love the fact that we all have something different that we do to make our work. For my first blog post, I decided to take a stab of writing something like that, to show what Its like for me to write as a poet. My writing process differs from genre to genre but today we will focus on how I write poetry.

There are moments when inspiration strikes, when I cannot do anything else but write a poem. I will sit down and type it away in my phone as often inspiration strikes when I am out due to just the world around me. You never know what is going to bring you inspiration and sometimes it hits you like a truck. When that happens, I normally have a finished piece at the end, not edited but that can come later when I transport the poem to my laptop and add or change minor things.

Poetry to me comes in so many ways. Rarely am I ever just sitting down with the intention to write something. I like to say the world comes to be in poems. Most often, poems come to me in the least convenient way possible. When I am driving is a big one. I drive a lot, I manage a lot of grooming salons and I am either driving in between them or the ride home is long and traffic strung. But its when I cannot physically write when the line or title comes to me. It’s like my brain is constantly thinking in poems but then the lines appear. I will speak it into my phone or if I’m at a point where I can park, I put it in my notes app. My notes app is a hot mess filled with random lines of poetry.

After that, I rarely get the full poem that way. It’s really like it’s just the seed that I plant to water later. Once I have time to sit down, I will go through my notes app and use what I wrote in there almost like prompts. If it was a line of a poem, I’ll type that and see where it takes me. Same with if I came up with a title, I use them as prompts to get the words flowing.

Early on, writing poetry was a late-night event for me. Maybe a wine glass or two in I would pour my soul out on the page. These nights are rarer for me now, but I wrote some of my best work doing that. Sometimes, In the soft night, when you’re the only one up, it feels more personal and vulnerable to write even if you never share it.

I urge all poets to write down their process and maybe send it my way because I am soooo curious on it. I love seeing how we all interact with the world and what happens before you hit the mic or hit post. Thank you to anyone who has taken the time to read this, if you have any questions or if you’d like to connect, head over to the contact page! I am always here to answer questions and help any poets in any way I can.

Until next Sunday…
